I don't know if this is true or not, but I don't think much of Rumsfeld, so I lean towards believing this. Eventually some general will write his memoirs and the truth will come out. But if it is true, then denying the generals the number of troops they asked for is unconscionable.

And if it is true Rumsfeld should resign (or be forced out). Our government should know that we must let the generals plan and execute the war. There will always be political considerations in any war (yes even in WWII), but we must let the generals do what they know how to do as much as possible. We also have to give them whatever resources they ask for.

 

U.S. Closes to Within 30 Miles of Baghdad

WASHINGTON (AP)- U.S.-led forces advancing on Baghdad have moved to within 30 miles of the Iraqi capital, a top U.S. general said Wednesday.

Maj. Gen. Stanley McChrystal told a Pentagon briefing that resistance from Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard was "sporadic, but not able to stop coalition maneuvers."

Two top Republican Guard units — the Medina and Baghdad divisions — are "no longer credible forces," said McChrystal, vice director of joint operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

U.S. troops have advanced quickly to the doorstep of Baghdad, leaving their commanders with a tantalizing choice: Continue the charge into Saddam Hussein's capital or wait for reinforcements and give Iraqis a chance to overthrow the regime themselves.

KUWAIT, April 3 — Moving swiftly through the suburbs of Baghdad, American forces launched an attack today on the capital's main international airport, less than 10 miles from the city.

In Baghdad, for the first time since the war started on March 19, power was cut across the city of five million people. The cause was not immediately apparent.

 

U.S. Troops Prove Easy Access to Baghdad

U.S. troops declared a near chokehold on Baghdad on Saturday and dashed daringly inside, blasting targets nestled in palm trees, to show they can move at will against the capital's beleaguered defenders.

Expectations were high of an ultimate showdown with a shredded but dangerous Iraqi force, not only in Baghdad but in Basra to the south and elsewhere along the war's many points of conflict.

"They're pretty much cut off in all directions," Air Force Capt. Dani Burrows, speaking for Central Command, said of Baghdad's fighters.
